About:

Since his graduation at the Art College Liège in 1999 , Dieter Nusbaum has been working as a freelance artist in the fields of painting, graphics and sculpture.
Nusbaum can be found in several German and international galleries, his works are shown at international fairs like AAF Singapore, AAF London Battersea, AAF London Hampstead, Paris Art Fair, Lausanne Art Fair, Art Fair Cologne, Art Luxembourg or Art Karlsruhe.
Many of his works have been purchased by public institutions as well as public and private art collections.

Nusbaum concentrates on art in the context of art-in-construction for public areas in cooperation with public institutions.
"The desire for diversity in the creative as well as in the stylistic is the unmistakable feature in the work of Dieter Nusbaum. One almost feels the much-quoted artistic urge to feel in the powerful painterly formulations on the canvas. And indeed it is the fire, the tangible passion of the artist and the skilful use of the painterly means that enables Dieter Nusbaum to offer us an art of the highest quality. "

Margrit ten Hoevel, art historian

Unfathomable worlds of imagery

Figurative and abstract, realistic and surreal at the same time. Anyone who wants to describe the work of Dieter Nusbaum faces a real challenge: they simply cannot be assigned to any subject. There is no drawer to put him in. Nusbaum's art is unique, very personal, sometimes even private, and highly innovative. His truly multi-layered world of images is unfathomable – often bewildering. The bewilderment is intentional.

With his works, Dieter Nusbaum embarks on an inner journey of discovery, and the viewer follows him like a curious travel companion, making his own discoveries along the way. The artist succeeds in this game of imagination, fantasies, and emotions by ingeniously merging several media and techniques.

Dieter Nusbaum discovered his peculiar visual language in his creative search for new means of expression. As an artist, he is endlessly curious, as daring and experimental as an alchemist. He began as a classic painter, then tried to bring together colors that simply refused to combine. Now he uses the material mix he has developed, much like a perfumer uses his scents to compose a unique fragrance. "I now know how to bring my different techniques together," says Nusbaum. "I know the effects I can achieve with them." What he puts on the canvas is well planned. "I have my composition in mind before I start," he confesses. "And yet I am always surprised at how chance intervenes and adds a new level of understanding." Dieter Nusbaum is a polymath. He is a painter, a photographer, and a printer all at once. They work hand in hand in personal union. In the end, everything is collaged and brought together according to a concept. The mixed technique that Dieter Nusbaum has developed and finally mastered over the past years serves one goal: to poke at associations and at the same time trigger emotions. Nusbaum's drive can be found in his guiding principle: "Art is conveyed emotion."

His narrative works are almost like a search image. They consist of a collage of various details and motifs. Here a bicycle appears, there a bird. The individual motifs are meaningful finds that enliven the artist's philosophy. Faces often appear – often those of his children and his wife – sometimes only a profile remains. These details are like ciphers and symbols, especially as they are mostly isolated, stylized, and abstracted through processing. The individual elements are based on various photos that Nusbaum himself has taken and then extensively edited. These photo motifs serve as printing templates for screen printing with the finest meshes. This is a delicate process that the artist has developed to perfection. He personally handles all steps in his spacious studio.

Each individual painting is unique. It is created on a canvas that is abstractly colored using different techniques. Sometimes paint is sprayed on, sometimes it's brushed on, and sometimes a squeegee is used to spread it across the surface. Only then are the image elements applied in multiple layers using a white screen printing process. Up to nine different prints may be applied to a single work. Each composition is different, even in cases where the artist has created a series. The handling of each technique requires great craftsmanship. Screen printing is a complex process, as Sigmar Polke himself knew, whom Dieter Nusbaum sees as his role model for famous prints. One wrong move and hours of preparation are lost. Furthermore, the fine-meshed screens that apply the color to the colored canvas are as delicate as they are expensive. Dieter Nusbaum could sing a song about some of the mistakes he's made. When printing, it can take just a few minutes or even seconds. A small mistake can destroy the entire image or render the valuable screen and its motif unusable.

Dieter Nusbaum was born in 1972 in Neuerburg in the Eifel region. After finishing high school, he studied sports and theology. A sports accident ended his original ambitions, so he went on to study art and painting in Lüttich. He completed his diploma there and has been a visual artist ever since. He lives and works in Frechen near Cologne. Dieter Nusbaum has exhibited his works in over 120 galleries, museums, and fairs, including some international shows. The artist has already received numerous awards and prizes. Among others, he is represented by the Overhead Gallery in Münster, which presents him at fairs in London, Lausanne, Paris, Singapore, Innsbruck, and Luxembourg.
